Energy-Water Nexus

Water is used throughout the energy sector and is required for extracting, refining and supplying oil, natural gas and others resources, while energy is used in the water sector for capturing, treating and distributing water which supports the functioning of society.

The strong interconnections between these two vital resources is often referred to as the energy-water ‘Nexus’. Energy and Water sectors are complementary and intrinsically linked since failures or innovation arising in one sector can induce a cascade of failures and/or efficiency gains in the other,

The energy-water Nexus goes far beyond the supply and demand of one resource for the other, it encompasses a range of shared opportunities and challenges. Innovation challenges and opportunities at the energy-water Nexus are cross-cutting, involving and impacting multiple sectors and stakeholders.
